Typography & Context | Mural Installation at Griffith University

This third year course at university built my skills to develop an advanced level of theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of typographic design. The curriculum departs from the traditional typographic discourse of form and function and encouraged me to consider my work through the lens of form and content. Engaging with experimental and rhetorical approaches to typography, I explored my own position and practice in relation to the overall context of intended (and unintended) audiences, subject matters, social environments, and available media.
Growing up, I was always good at creating content physically through art mediums and university taught me how to transcend those skills into digital technologies. This brief gave me an opportunity to dive back into the raw skills and talent that I am passionate about and create a typographic mural for all future designers to see. I have created a beautiful, bold and visually engaging type installation on Griffith University campus, and I’m so proud of it.
It took me a few drafts to get to my final idea. Once I finalised my purpose, concept and target audience, it was a piece of cake putting the rest of the installation together. There was a lot of pressure prior to even putting paint on the wall. I hold myself very highly and despite the time limitations and approval restrictions, I just wanted to walk away from this semester-long project being happy with my final outcome. I enjoyed the entire process of building our concepts, developing a design for a target audience, and working alongside my fantastic peers (more like 'designers') around me. As previously mentioned, my limitations were small obstacles but didn’t hold me back from completing the installation to the best of my capacity.
Time. Not only did my concept need multiple drafts back and forth from the client, but I also only had 4 weeks to complete this installation. This is the biggest painting I’ve ever done, so it was definitely quite a challenge for me to work out a realistic timeline to complete the mural before the due dates.
Overall, after 28 hours of creating the brilliant type installation I made, it was so worth it. QCA tech services provided me with all the resources and materials to bring my idea to life – I didn’t have to provide anything from out of my pocket into this project! Which was fantastic! This entire process of working like a designer in the real world has inspired me to bring all my talent and into my future.
As I progress through university, I hope to not only maintain these skills, but improve them also. Creative thinking is not something that you leave behind after graduating, so it is important that I take these skills not only with me for the next year left of my degree, but for the rest of my life. If I succeed in doing that, then I will always be able to splash some of my own passion into whatever project is thrown at me in the future.
